S&D Group calls for protection for the people of Guinea-Bissau
Socialist & Democrat vice-president Véronique de Keyser (BE), the co-ordinator for foreign affairs Ana Gomes (PT) and the co-ordinator for development Ricardo Cortés Lastra (ES) deeply regret the situation in Guinea-Bissau following the military coup of last Thursday. They are concerned for the safety of the detained interim president and prime minister, and of the whole Guinean people.
The S&D co-ordinators stress that the European Union should draw the lessons from developments in neighbouring Bissau, where the security situation is volatile following the coup of September 2010, when the president and the head of the armed forces were assassinated. At that time, the EU decided not to extend its Common Security and Defence Policy (CSDP) mission aimed at supporting security sector reform, a central element for the stabilisation of the country. "That suspension, when Guinea-Bissau needed that support the most, was a mistake" said Ana Gomes.
"Political instability and lack of security in West Africa should be of deep concern to the EU as the region has become fertile ground for criminal networks, trafficking in arms, drugs and human beings, besides hosting terrorist groups such as the AQIM (Al-Qaeda Organisation in the Islamic Maghreb) and Boko Haram" noted Véronique de Keyser.
"A UN Security Council mandate must be urgently requested to deploy a long-term stabilisation mission in Guinea-Bissau, with EU, African Union and CPLP (Community of Portuguese Language Countries)contributions. There can be no development in Guinea-Bissau without the rule of law and security for its people. Besides, Europe's security is also at stake in Guinea-Bissau" said Ana Gomes.
This military coup took place as the country was preparing the second round of presidential elections, scheduled for 29 April. "The international community supports a peaceful, democratic and fair conclusion of the electoral process," said Ricardo Cortés Lastra. "We urge a swift return to the normal functioning of the democratic institutions of the country, and for the international community and regional bodies to ensure the security of all Guinea-Bissau citizens", he concluded.
