Madam President, I have the honour to lead the mission to Malta and I would like to concur that indeed there is still more work to be done. We are waiting for an answer from the Conference of Presidents but, of course, the work to be done should be done under the remit of the Committee on Civil Liberties, Justice and Home Affairs, and the new committee that is to be established following on from the Committee on Money Laundering, Tax Avoidance and Tax Evasion (PANA Committee).

However, Mr President, what I wish to ask for now is that you should raise with the Vice-President of the Commission and High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy the situation in Ethiopia. Brutal repression is going on. The Government, including the Prime Minister, has resigned. A state of emergency has been re-imposed, and the statement made by the European Union is a shame by comparison with the one put out by the Americans condemning the reinstatement of the state of emergency.

I ask you to bring this up with the Commission and with High Representative Mogherini. The European Union needs to take a position in the light of our values and the interests of democracy - which must be inclusive - in Ethiopia, as well as the re-establishment of the rule of law and respect for human rights.
