Preparations for the Council of Europe (18-19 December 2014) (debate)
Madam President, the Mayor of my home town of Sintra is forced now to open school canteens not just to hungry pupils, but also to their unemployed parents. Are you not ashamed, Mr Juncker, that this is happening in a country, Portugal, that some like Mr Weber ridiculously believe to have become the locomotive of growth in the EU? Why do you think there is no money - private or public - to invest in jobs and growth while tax havens in the EU and outside accumulate piles of money which is masked by companies and individuals who evaded and avoided paying tax in the EU Member States?
Will you in the Commission and in the Council face your responsibilities - exposed by the LuxLeaks scandal - and put an end to the race to the bottom that is going on among Member States as regards tax dumping, in evident violation of fair competition in the single market, undermining the monetary union and fostering tax criminality, tax injustice and corruption throughout the EU financial system? On the external agenda: do not let the crises in Russia, Ukraine and Turkey continue to overshadow and to block action by the Council on the EU's security interests, which are put in danger by the insecurity in Libya.
