Reply from Commissioner Oettinger to the question concerning the investigation in Bulgaria uncovering an extensive network of corruption linked to EU-funded money
The European Anti-Fraud Office (OLAF) has informed the Commission that it is looking into the allegations concerning the possible misuse of EU funds in Bulgaria that have recently been brought to light by journalists. OLAF started looking into the matter following information of potential investigative interest that emerged, including in reports in the press.
The mandate of OLAF is to carry out independent administrative investigations into fraud, corruption and irregularities involving EU financial interests, including funds disbursed. Neither OLAF nor the Commission has the competence to intervene in individual investigations in Member States as the Member States are themselves responsible for ensuring internal security. Nevertheless, operational cooperation among Member States and EU agencies is crucial in the fight against organised crime and the Bulgarian authorities can rely also on Europol’s and Eurojust's support.
