Written question to the Commission concerning the rewarding by DG COMMP of vulture funds
Is it not obscene to receive a 10.75% interest rate when banks are financed at interest rates close to zero?
What is the Commission's legal and rational basis for forcing the public Portuguese bank Caixa Geral de Depósitos (CGD) to seek EUR 500 million in perpetual subordinated debt issuances from the ‘market', in an operation restricted to a group of investors, as a condition for Portugal to be able to provide CGD with EUR 2.5 billion of financing, with interest rates of between 1% and 4.5% in the debt market?
Using the same perverse logic, the Commission forced Italian and Spanish banks to pay loan-shark interest to the very same vulture funds for similar loans.
What principles and interests is the Directorate-General for Competition acting on by supporting ‘vulture funds'? Can the Commission justify the fact that this has been detrimental to the people of certain Member States, feeding finance vultures and populist movements that attempt to tap into popular indignation?
