Written question to HR/VP Mogherini concerning the harassment and persecution of Sudanese Christian citizens and Christian converts
The Sudanese authorities continue harassing and persecuting Christian citizens and Christian converts. Rev. Hassan Abduraheem Kodi Taour remains in custody. His lawyers have been informed that, according to the National Intelligence and Security Service (NISS), he faces serious charges related to undermining national security.
Rev. Kuwa Shamal Abazmam Kurri (Pastor Kuwa) has been rearrested and his file passed to the Prosecutor's Office.
Mr Abdulmonem Abdumawla Issa Abdumawla, a Christian convert, is being detained by the Prosecutor's Office. The conditions of the detention centre where the three men are being detained are very bad.
Other Christians have had their passports confiscated by NISS.
1. Is the VP/HR monitoring the harassment and persecution conducted by the Sudanese authorities against Christian citizens?
2. Has the VP/HR voiced concerns about this specific human rights violation to the Sudanese authorities?
3. What action will the VP/HR take to ensure that the Sudanese authorities respect the right of their citizens to freely profess their religion and that the charges brought by NISS against Rev. Taour, Rev. Kuwa and Mr Abdumawla are dropped and they are released from detention?
