Written Question to the Commission concerning the situation of human rights in Colombia
In November 2016, a Colombian human rights delegation raised concerns about the ‘El Cerrejón' mining project; the ‘Ríos Vivos' movement, which seeks to protect rivers against the threat of dam construction; monocultures of crops such as bananas and African oil palm in the Lower Atrato; and the development of various port infrastructure projects in Buenaventura.
It would appear that in the course of their megaprojects certain multinational corporations have committed serious human rights violations, including violating the rights to water, health and decent housing. According to the delegation, these megaprojects have led to an increase in the number of displaced persons and communities and triggered a rise in violence.
In view of the European Parliament Resolution of 25 October 2016 on corporate liability for serious human rights abuses in third countries (2015/2315(INI)):
1. What is the Commission doing to monitor the activities of European businesses in Colombia?
2. What action does the Commission intend to take against European businesses that fail to uphold human rights in third countries?
