Written Question to HR/VP Mogherini regarding the human rights situation and press freedom in Azerbeijan
The European Parliament has repeatedly expressed its serious concerns over the increasing infringement on media freedoms and the space for public debate and civil society in Azerbaijan. The close to hundred political prisoners currently detained as well as the continuing arrests and intimidation illustrate the lack of compliance with fundamental, mutually agreed aspects of the European Neighbourhood Policy.
1. How has the EU policy on Azerbaijan changed since this unprecedented crackdown on human rights? Is this not the right moment to apply the less-for-less principle?
2. How does the Commission ensure that EU funding is no longer provided to government-operated ngo's, legitimising the regime? How are real human rights activists and organisations supported instead?
3. What actions has the EU Delegation to Azerbaijan undertaken for releasing political prisoners? Did it request access to the prisoners? If this was not authorised, has an official complaint been filed?
