Almaraz nuclear power plant
In the light of the Commission's answer of 25 April 2016 on safety failings at the Almaraz nuclear power plant in Spain, where incidents and monitoring problems have repeatedly made headlines, we would like to have the following clarifications:
1. The Commission states in its answer that it has received the conclusions of an assessment carried out by the Spanish Nuclear Safety Council (CSN), giving an assurance that the Almaraz power plant is being operated safely. On what date was this assessment carried out? What was its scope?
2. On 29 April 2016, the Portuguese Parliament adopted a resolution recommending that the government take all the necessary initiatives vis-à-vis the Spanish State and European institutions with the aim of ensuring that the Almaraz power plant is closed down. Is the Commission aware of these developments? The Commission undertook in its answer to ‘take appropriate steps' in the event of ‘conclusive evidence of non-compliance with the requirements of the Nuclear Safety Directive'. Exactly what steps will the Commission take?
3. Given the many complaints that have been made concerning the serious threat posed to the population and the environment, does the Commission consider it prudent and compatible with public safety to wait until August 2017 for the transposition of the Nuclear Safety Directive to make ‘the prevention and (...) mitigation of the consequences of an accident' possible?
